The signification of Paradise

PARADISE (PARDIS) is a celestial garden.  The words of paradeisos in Greek, paradise in European languages, and firdaws in Arabic, originally came from Persia the "Avestan pairi-daeza" , meaning garden, itself was the terrestrial image of the celestial garden of paradise. The term of paradise also means a piece of land made more agreeable than its surroundings by cultivation or an enclosure, and especially a royal park.

In the Islamic religious text paradise (firduws), is described as an eternal spring and garden with which the trees have continuous blossoms and everything is joyful. There is no corruption in this world. The minerals are valuable and crystallized. In paradise the faithful recline at ease, drinking and enjoying the embraces of their celestial spouses. In this garden, there is no time and its inhabitants are all young. . According to Sufis, paradise is the manifestation of absolute beauty and the inhabitants of "Paradise" enter into every beautiful form that they conceive and desire . Moslem mystics simply interpreted paradise as being the good deeds of man.

Paradise in Persian Gulf Art Center in Hormoz Island

Ahmad Nadalian

The Persian Gulf Art Centre on Hormoz Island in the Persian Gulf was established in March of 2009. This new arts center is a host for contemporary environmental artists and is linked to Paradise International Residential Center for Environmental Art.  In January 2010 invited artists who participated in the 25th Festival of Environmental Art in Iran stayed in this centre and used colored earth and natural pigments to ornament the buildings.  In some instances the work was conceptual and readymade objects were used to convey site-specific ideas. For this restoration project, we also used nanotechnology, which made the colors even more solid.

In summer, we usually receive international and local artists in north and now in autumn and winter we can also receive artists in Hormoz Island.  The artists who came in winter time can stay in our center, and realized their environmental art in the nature of Iran or collect material to create art pieces in their homelands. They can experience living with Iranian families, society, and traditional food.

During the summer months, Paradise Art Center usually receives international and local artists in the north of Iran, and now in autumn and winter months we can also receive artists on Hormoz Island.  The artists who have residencies during the winter can stay in our center to realize their environmental art in the nature and landscape of Iran. They can also experience living with Iranian families, take part in the local cultural and society, and enjoy traditional food.

Tree of life in my room

In recent festival we may involve "Environment art".  In many art dictionaries the "Environment art" refers to art which involves the creation or manipulation of a large or enclosed space, many effectively surrounding its audience.

The space of our small apartment in Tehran

Architectural (including landscape architectural) design might be said to qualify as environment art, although the term usually refers to artworks which do not function as either of these kinds of environmental design typically do. Many earthworks would qualify as environment.   Environment art Large sculptural or spatial works that create environments which the spectator may enter and become absorbed in.

This image shows the interior space of my room when I first bought this building.

This was a sift, but now is a bird cage

A German traveler and musician, Jonas Fedrbe, participated in our festival and wrote this statement:  "You will not regret anything you ever did, but you will regret everything that you didn't"

The children of Hormoz Island also participated in our festival

I found this damaged doll on the street

I asked Kaniz to clean the doll and prepare local traditional cloths for dressing it

Now the doll lives in the Persian Gulf Art Centre

I was also inspired by the primitive drawings of Kaniz and her life, and produced a number of painting behind glass. I used organic, colored earth.

Despite all of her suffering, Kaniz seems to have a childlike happiness.  This is what I admire and wish for

In the current year many tourists visited the residency. We had German visitors in our group.

Everything goes well at the artist residency.

Mohammad who is Hassan’s brother is the security guard of artist residency.

Mohammad who is Kaniz’s grandson helps in painting and repairing the artist residency.

Kaniz’s daughters and neighbors also clean there.

Kaniz’s son, Sina, helps his dad to provide colored earth.

Roqi (Roqieh) prepares the colored earth.

The girls are painting.

They all get paid.

We now have gas.

Food and dishes are dangling in space instead of being placed in cabinets.

We have water heater.

The bathroom, kitchen and two rooms that tenants live in are painted.

And we have a clock. In paradise the time does not pass.

I feel good that the old home for addicted ones, is now artists’ residency and hosts the artists.
